El Gordo
El Gordo is a popular weekly lottery game played in Spain.
This game is often confused with the similarly named Christmas lottery draw that offers huge jackpots on December 22 each year, known elsewhere as the Spanish Sunday Lottery, with the expression “El Gordo” often being used to describe the fat jackpot prize for all Spanish lottery games!
El Gordo draws take place on Sundays at 21:30 local time.
Entry costs €1.00.
To enter, choose five numbers between 1 and 54, plus a Superball number between 0 and 9. Numbers can be manually selected, or go for Quick Pick to play with randomly generated numbers.
System Entry allows players to pick additional numbers to increase their chances of winning, whereas Advance Play enables participants to enter draws up to 2 weeks in advance.
Jackpot
El Gordo has a minimum guaranteed jackpot of €5 million.
This rollover lottery is not capped, with jackpot prizes often growing significantly higher than the minimum guaranteed figure as a result.
The biggest ever winning El Gordo jackpot was €33 million on July 14, 2011.
Odds and Prizes
The odds of winning the El Gordo jackpot are 1 in 31,625,100. Not only are these reasonable odds for winning a lottery jackpot of this size, but the chances of winning secondary prizes are attractive too.
Players can win El Gordo prizes at nine different tiers, with the overall odds of winning a prize at 1 in 6.1.
