Lotto 47
Lotto 47 is one of several state lottery games operated by Michigan Lottery.
Lotto 47 draws are held twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 19:29 local time, with ticket sales closing at 19:08 beforehand. Subsequent purchases are entered into the following draw.
Entry into Lotto 47 costs $1.00, with players choosing six numbers between 1 and 47, or can select an Easy Pick with randomly generated numbers. Easy Pick participants must enter 5, 10 or 15 tickets at a time as there is no single-ticket option.
The ‘Combo My Numbers’ feature allows players to choose up to 10 numbers. This boosts the chances of winning but also increases the cost of entry.
Players can also add Double Play to their ticket for an extra $1.00. The Double Play draw takes place immediately after the main draw and uses the same numbers chosen for Lotto 47. Lotto 47 Double Play has a fixed jackpot of $1.5 million!
Players can also select an EZmatch, again for an extra $1.00. Matching the previously chosen numbers with any of the randomly generated numbers on the EZmatch ticket awards an instant cash prize of up to $500.
There is also an Advance Play option for up to 60 draws at a time.
Jackpot
Lotto 47 has a minimum guaranteed jackpot of $1 million.
Lotto 47 has no rollover or jackpot cap, with the biggest ever jackpot win being $23.5 million on March 1, 2008.
Odds and Prizes
The odds of winning the Lotto 47 jackpot are 1 in 10,737,573. It has four different prize tiers, with overall odds of 1 in 47 of winning a prize.
These prize tiers and odds are exactly the same for the Double Play draw, but with bigger payouts.
Prize category | Numbers Matched | Winning Odds | Winning Odds % |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 6 | 1 in 10,737,573 | 0.000009 |
2 | 5 | 1 in 43,649 | 0.002 |
3 | 4 | 1 in 873 | 0.11 |
4 | 3 | 1 in 50 | 2 |
Payout and Taxes
Michigan Lottery prizes of over $5,000 are subject to state and federal tax at 4.25% and 25%, respectively. These sums are withheld from winnings at source.
Non-US citizens pay the full 30% tax.
Jackpot winners can choose a lump sum cash payment or a 30-year annual payment plan; however, players who go for cash only receive around 50% of the jackpot, so the annual payment option is definitely the best option, with players having up to 60 days to make a decision. If players do not notify Michigan Lottery, they are paid in annual installments by default.
Who Can Play Lotto 47?
Players must be at least 18 years of age to buy lottery tickets in Michigan.
Tickets are on sale from authorized lottery retailers across the state or via the official Michigan Lottery website and app.
Lotto 47 is currently not available on popular Lottery Agent sites, nor can non-Michigan residents enter via the official website due to a Michigan address being required.
