Lotto

Lotto is one of several popular lottery games played in Finland.

Lotto costs €1.00 to play. Draws are held on live television, taking place once a week on Saturdays at 22:10 local time. Tickets are sold up to 21:45 on Saturday evenings, with sales resuming at 22:30 after the draw.

To enter Lotto, choose seven numbers between 1 and 40, or play with a set of randomly generated numbers. Players can also participate in Lotto in a variety of other ways.

In “System and Rake”, up to 18 numbers can be entered in different combinations to improve the chances of winning. An extra €0.50 adds “Plus” to the ticket, which doubles winnings if it matches the number drawn, with the exception of the jackpot.

There is also a Joker game that costs €2.00 to enter, with a jackpot of €1 million. Joker is played by selecting seven numbers from 0 to 9, with the jackpot being won by matching all numbers in the order they are drawn.

Jackpot

The minimum Lotto jackpot is €700,000 and there is no jackpot or rollover cap.

The biggest Lotto jackpot was won in 2018 at €14.5 million.

Odds and Prizes

The odds of winning the Lotto jackpot are 1 in 18,643,560.

These are favourable odds compared to many national lottery games, although these lotteries tend to have similar or better odds, but with far higher jackpots.

Players can win Lotto prizes at seven different tiers, with 1-in-50 odds of winning something.

Payout and Taxes

Lottery prizes in Finland are not subject to tax, being paid out as lump sums only. Prizes can be claimed up to one year after the draw.

Those who play Lotto online from abroad should check local tax laws to see if prize winnings must be declared.

Who Can Play Lotto

Lotto tickets are on sale from authorized retailers across Finland, as well as from the official Veikkaus Lotto website.

You must be at least 15 years of age to buy Lotto tickets in stores in Finland, or at least 18 years of age to play online.

Players outside of Finland can play Lotto online via Lottery Agent websites.

History of Lotto

Lotteries have been popular in Finland since the 1940s. The first Lotto game was introduced in 1971 and has kept the same format ever since. Today, Lotto is one of over 20 lottery games played in the country.
